Restaurants. Consulting firms. Fashion boutiques. Schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While\nthe technology enterprise aspires for growth and the social enterprise is\ngeared towards impact, the small business enterprise is built for stability. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A\ngood example of a small business is a nursery and primary school. Schools are\nthe quintessential small business and their owners are devoted to running them\nas the stable and manageable operation they are meant to be. Success is not\ndefined by the ability to attract international investors, but on keeping the\ndoors of the school open year after year and turning a generous profit that\nwould allow for a modest expansion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nacquisition of a school may be funded largely by a loan from a bank, as is the\ncase with most small businesses. In other cases, the founder, friends and\nfamily fund the small business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nexpectation for this type of business is that it should grow to cover its costs\nof debt and\/or equity. Typically the emphasis is on providing a stable and\nenduring livelihood, not necessarily creating mind-boggling wealth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Usually,\nno formal exit is envisioned and the business is run in such a way as to\nsupport the family and its lifestyle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nlifestyle implications of the small business are as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>It usually has a healthy work\/life balance<\/li><li>In some circumstances, it can be difficult to\nrun a small business, depending on the business and the needs of the founder<\/li><li>It may also involve long hours as the company\ncomprises only a few employees<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The small business enterprise is built for stability.
